Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) are buildings that consume very little energy for cooling, heating, hot water production, and lighting.

The buildings "nearly zero energy" (nearly Zero Energy Building nZEB) are buildings that consume very little energy for cooling, heating, hot water production and lighting. New rules for the energy efficiency and performance of buildings will come into force in Italy and other countries by March 10, 2020. This new directive requires European countries to implement a long-term strategy to support the renovation of residential and non-residential buildings, in order to obtain a highly energy-efficient real estate portfolio by 2050.

The nearly zero-energy buildings The concept of nearby Zero Energy Building was introduced by directive 2010/31/EU, which has established that by December 31, 2020 All new buildings must be nZEB. In Italy, the definition that has been adopted is that of "nearly zero-energy building" and has established that by December 31, 2020, all new buildings must be nearly zero-energy.

What is the definition of nZEB?

The National Law defines it as follows: A building with very high energy performance [...] whose very low or almost zero energy requirement is covered to a significant extent by energy from renewable sources.

What are the main consumptions in a building?

  • -heating
  • -cooling
  • -production of domestic hot water
  • -electricity required to operate lighting and household appliances
  • -ventilation for air exchange
  •

What are the characteristics that allow a building to achieve the nZEB level?

An nZEB building must be well insulated, utilize solar energy, minimize the use of mechanical systems, and exploit production from renewable sources.

  1. -The principles of sustainable and bioclimatic design will be followed.
  2. -The building must be oriented to optimize the influence of the sun
  3. -The building envelope must be well insulated and shaded to avoid both heat loss and overheating.
  4. -The systems must operate at low temperatures
  5. -Renewable energy production systems (such as photovoltaic and solar thermal) will be installed.
  6. -Energy consumption will need to be constantly monitored
  7.

On average, considering the existing building stock, consumption for heating and hot water varies between 200 and 400 kWh/m2 per year, with significant savings. Furthermore, nZEB buildings should achieve a much lower energy level, reaching at least 30 kWh/m2 per year.
